Following its decision to promote the use of indigenous leather within Indian public sector, the authorities in Delhi are now pushing for the country’s leather products to deliver more on the export front.
Speaking at the "Fourth India International Footwear Fair 2018" in New Delhi, India’s Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu said Narendra Modi’s government was currently formulating a strategy for greater coordination with all the states as well as the trade associations for global promotion of India's footwear industry.
"We are working with the industry to prepare a strategic vision for the footwear and allied sector industries. Suggestions made by the industry would get all the support from my ministry," he told the fair, which is being held to showcase the best of international footwear design and innovation.
The minister suggested a number of ways in which the government could help the leather sector, which is growing, despite a competitive landscape. “Set up clusters in four-five states,” he said, adding, “we will engage with states to provide land and other support.” He called on the industry to continue to grow and innovate and make India a global manufacturing hub for footwear.
