India’s West Bengal government has allotted land for the tannery units which were closed down during the Kumbh Mela festival. 70 acres of land at the Calcutta Leather Complex in Bantala has been allotted for the additional tannery units.
The government had issued a directive to shut down the tanneries local to the Ganga river, from 15 December 2018 to March 2019 to bring a halt to the unregulated waste disposal.
Speaking to KNN TV India, the president of the Indian Industries Association (IIA), Sunil Vaish said: “As many as 10-12 tannery units in Kanpur have been allotted land by the West Bengal government, to shift their operations to the state during the Bengal Global Business Summit.”
