According to data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Kolkata, under the Ministry of Commerce, India’s leather and leather-product exports increased by 17% to $ 3.786 billion during the first eight months of the 2013-14 financial year, compared to $3.2 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Value-wise, leather footwear exports brought in $1.2 billion for India followed by leather goods with $880 million and finished leather with $852 million, according to the DGCI&S.

The major international markets for Indian leather and leather products were Germany (12.6%), the UK (11.4%), and the US (11.3). Italy, Hong Kong, France, Spain, Netherlands, China, Denmark, UAE and Belgium were other notable markets. Together, these countries accounted for nearly 76% of India’s total leather and leather products exports.
