The Dutch government plans to invest more than €2 million in the Kanpur leather cluster, to help the 150-year old Kanpur leather and tannery cluster treat the effluents currently being discharged into river Ganga.
The €2 million will be injected into Kanpur through Dutch NGO Solidaridad and a consortium has been constituted comprising Solidaridad, PUM (Dutch senior management expert programme), STAHL (Dutch leather chemicals major), UP leather industry association, the small tanneries association and the Ganga Pollution Control Unit. The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) will be the technical partner in the consortium.
Last year, Kanpur-based Tasty Dairy Specialities Limited collaborated with a Dutch consortium and set up a dairy excellence centre called INDUCED (Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence in Dairying) in Kanpur.
