Brazil has shown an increase in leather and skins exports last April, with 15.946 million square metres of leather sold to foreign markets, a growth of 2.3% in comparison to hides traded in April 2015 (15.589 million).
The analysis was carried out by the Department of Commercial Intelligence at CICB (the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry) following a report from the Department of Foreign Trade from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC).
Considering the first quarter of 2016, the area of hides traded also shows an increase: 8.7% in comparison to the first four months of 2015. In BRL, the value of exports from January to April this year has reached BRL 2.663 billion – or a 7.1% growth compared with the same months of last year (BRL 2.487 billion).
Executive president of CICB, José Fernando Bello says the increase of exports in 2016 was especially pronounced in leather of high aggregate value: a growth of 114.2% on semi-finished leather and 16.4% on finished leather from January to April this year in relation to 2015.
"These are numbers that have been much celebrated and are the result of a great combined work towards promoting sustainability, commercial relations and the enhancement of our image next to the more than 80 countries that buy leather from Brazil," said Bello. "Actions within the scope of the Brazilian Leather project – an initiative of CICB in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) – has proved to be decisive for such positive results."
