6 August 2007

May 19, 2007, was the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the technical laboratory of LANXESS Wuxi Chemicals Co Ltd in Wuxi, China, 120 km north-west of Shanghai. The company, originally formed as a joint venture with Wuxi Dyestuff Factory, produce and market leather chemicals primarily for the Chinese market. In addition to synthetic and resin based tanning materials, they also manufacture a comprehensive range of other wet end and finishing auxiliaries. The major customer sectors are the automotive, footwear and furniture industries. Dr Bernhard Wehling, head of the Leather business unit of LANXESS, explains: 'China is already the leading market worldwide for leather chemicals. The fact that LANXESS is one of the leading suppliers in this market is a great success and speaks volumes for our staff. We want to continue to grow faster than the rest of the market in China. Our continuing commitment to Wuxi is crucial to this aim.' Alongside products, there is considerable demand in China for technical know-how, development experience and knowledge of market and fashion trends. As part of the expansion at the site, a new laboratory building was constructed in 2004. Production of leather chemicals began in Wuxi at the start of 1998, a year after completion of the first office building in February 1997. At the end of 2003, it was decided to expand and, within just 15 months, two other buildings containing plants for synthesizing and spray-drying tanning agents had been constructed. Since the start of 2005, liquid and powder tanning agents have been produced in Wuxi. The site in Wuxi is a model plant in both China and beyond. In 2001 and 2002, it was accredited to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The company have also received several awards. In 2004, they were awarded the title 'Environmentally Friendly Company' by China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA). In 2005, they were then awarded the Chinese government's most prestigious environmental prize for ecologically responsible production. Indeed, a special postage stamp was printed to commemorate the occasion.May 19, 2007, was the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the technical laboratory of LANXESS Wuxi Chemicals Co Ltd in Wuxi, China, 120 km north-west of Shanghai.
