Increased production capacity

1 July 2001

The Sai Gon Leather Factory and the Vinh Tannery are to be merged by the Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Corporation as part of their programme to boost production during the 2001-2005 period. This should increase output to ten million ft2 of leather by 2005 from the three million ft2 at present. A wastewater treatment system at the Vinh Tannery will be completed in 2002. The Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Corporation hope to sell 63 million pairs of shoes at an export turnover of US$400 million by 2005. They will start construction of an industrial footwear complex in Red river, Hai Duong province, at an estimated cost of VND500 billion in the third quarter of this year. The complex will produce leather for footwear, bags, and suitcases, thus reducing imported materials and replacing sub-contract production with direct production for exports. Another complex will be built in Southern Viet Nam at a cost of VND950 billion next year. The complex will include large-scale production units with high-tech facilities. The two complexes will provide 32,000-40,000 jobs. Existing factories, including the Thai Nguyen, Hue, Yen Vien and Ha Noi footwear factories and the Da Nang Bag Enterprise Nguyen, will also be expanded. By 2005, the corporation expect to reduce imports of materials by 50-60% and to expand markets in Europe, the US and Japan. An additional 21,000 jobs will be generated by the programme.
