Hides prices reach a ten-year high!

17 March 2011

Get more information at the Sourcing, Safety and Sustainability Conference, Hong Kong, March 31. The price of hides is a key market driver in the leather industry.  2010-2011 has seen a dramatic rise in the price of raw material with a further 5-10% increase reported in January 2011 and a continuing strong upward movement through February into March, which has had a major effect within the associated supply chain.

Hide trade expert, Don Ohsman of Hidenet Publications has been invited to offer a perspective on hide pricing and supply trends at the sustainable sourcing event organised in Hong Kong on March 31.

Ohsman will discuss:

  • how a handful of producers control hide prices for the most prevalent selections and how that affects the world hide market and consequently the wet blue and crust markets as well
  • why prices are so high and possible next step
  • the North American hide/wet blue market, and other markets, with particular reference to Brazil

These and many other topical sourcing and sustainability questions will be addressed by a panel of key speakers and leading international experts in a compelling and informative programme dedicated to responsible product sourcing.

Presentations will be provided by leading accessories brand Cole Haan, leading product safety law firm Sidley Austin LLP, mould prevention specialists Micro-Pak, anti-mould chemical provider Thor Specialities, global shipping giant Orient Overseas Container Line, supply chain traceability company Historic Futures, social and ethical factory compliance specialists InFact Global Partners, hide trade experts Hidenet Publications, and industry forum Leather Naturally!.

The event is organised by BLC Leather Technology Centre and APLF, and  sponsored by Micro-Pak Ltd, Thor Specialties srl, Stahl and Leather International.
