CLRI celebrate diamond jubilee

The Central Leather Research Institute, the largest leather research institute in the world with over 515 research members, celebrated its 60th anniversary on April 24.


The celebrations involved addresses by Rafeeque Ahmed and S S Kumar and the distribution of prizes. Foundation Day special lectures on a variety of topics were followed by a programme of cultural events and dinner. The Institute's main focus is research and development, consultancy and HR development. It offers BTEC in Leather technology and PhD in leather, chemistry, biotech, and currently hosts 150 research students and 150 research staff. Courses cover leather, environment, engineering, chemistry, leather processing and production, footwear, leathergoods and garments as well as design. CLRI also offer an advisory service for planning processes within tanneries. They are involved in the dissemination of know how, product design and development, testing and quality assurance, plus the development of environmentally friendly leather chemicals and certification quality. They began offering fashion trends in 1995 and have held leather fashion shows at the institute for the past 14 years. In 1994 CLRI were invited by Modeurop to be an observer to set colour trends. Now CLRI are involved each season in June and December presenting over 500 different colour proposals for the Modeurop round tables.
