The India Council for Leather Exports (CLE) have announced that efforts are being made to set up a design studio in India for leather products with the help of Italy. The National Institute of Design (NID) and Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) are the other partners in the project.

A delegation comprising representatives from CLE, NID and FDDI are visiting Italy in June with an aim to take the initiative to the next level.

‘We have already had a meeting with the Joint Secretary of the Commerce Ministry of India and now a delegation is going to Italy to meet up with the government officials there’, the CLE Regional Director – North, Sanjay Kumar said.

He said the proposal for setting up the design studio is aimed at bringing Italian technology and know-how to the Indian market.

‘We are proposing to set up the design studio at one of the NID centres in India’, he said.

He said India currently exports leather products worth $4.6 billion. In the meantime, the Italian Trade Commission has announced ‘Expo Riva Schuh India', an exhibition of footwear and leather accessories to be held in New Delhi from July 5-7.
