BASF publish book on leather manufacture

15 November 2007

'From collagen to leather' is the title of a new 350-page book published in English by BASF. Professor Günther Reich, the eminent collagen scientist and former head of the Research Institute Leder-und Kunststoffbahnen (FILK), Freiberg, was assisted in the writing of the book by members of the BASF leather department.

Dr Tilman Taeger, responsible for innovation in the leather department at BASF, described the target audience of the publication. ‘Collagen is the basic ingredient of leather made from the skin of vertebrates. The aim of this book is to explain the chemical modifications collagen undergoes during the transformation into leather to scientists who wish to familiarise themselves with the manufacture of leather.’ The book is divided into several chapters that cover the latest scientific research as well as a comprehensive survey of the existing literature. It could become a valuable tool in the development of new technologies and new products in the leather industry. The leather department at BASF has again demonstrated its leading role in the field of specialist literature. Past publications include ‘Possible defects in leather production’ and the ‘Pocket Book for the Leather Technologist’. They have been published in several languages including Chinese and are popular with leather technicians all over the world. ‘From collagen to leather’ can be ordered from BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Hansjürgen Schäfer, G-EVX/LET - G 100, 67056 Ludwigshafen, Germany.
