Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association, Abdul Salam has urged the federal minister for gas and petroleum to ensure the supply of gas to the leather industry located at Korangi industrial area is on 24/7. A non-stop supply would ensure the industry will be able to continue processing raw hides and skins in time, against the commitments to secure important foreign exchange for the country.

China Boycott Prompts H&M Sales Slump

Swedish fashion giant H&M saw its sales slump in China, months after it became the target of a Chinese boycott. H&M was one of several brands that raised concerns over alleged human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province. In March, H&M was removed from the Chinese online retail platform Tmall and domestic phone makers’ app stores after it expressed concerns about the alleged use of Uyghur forced labour in cotton production. The company’s statement led celebrities to cut ties with the brand and e-commerce platforms to drop H&M. The sales slide came even as H&M’s global business returned to profit as the impact of the pandemic eased.

Pakistan Exports Soar

Pakistan’s textile and clothing sector exports have posted a near 19% growth in the current fiscal year compared to the same period a year ago, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed on Saturday. The growth in exports of value-added sectors contributed to an increase in overall exports from the sectors. One of the reasons for growth in these sectors is due to low-base of last year when export-oriented industries remained closed due to the Covid-19 lockdown and cancellation of orders from international buyers.
