Turkish Leather Capacity on Slow Rise

The Turkish manufacturing industry’s capacity utilisation rate (CUR) increased month-on-month in September, marking the fourth straight monthly rise, according to data. The local manufacturing industry units operated at 78.1% of their capacity this month, up one point from August, according to a Turkish Central Bank survey released on Friday.

338 Bangladesh Factories Running During Lockdown

Some 338 factories are running their operations across Bangladesh during the 14-day strict lockdown that began on July 23rd, according to the country’s police. These factories, mostly pharmaceuticals, food processing, and emergency product manufacturers, are located in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Khulna.

Kenyan Leather Facility to be Renovated

Kenya’s Nairobi County recently handed over the £279k Kariokor common leather manufacturing facility to the Kenyan Leather Development Council for renovation. The market, which hosted 1,000 traders, is expected to house at least 10,000 workers in three years. An opening date has not yet been announced. The aim is to support micro and small enterprises.

Savar Tannery Incompletion Hits Production

Although nearly four years and three months have already passed since the deadline for the relocation of tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar, many important works of the project like Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and solid waste management have not yet been completed or handed over. The delay is hampering production and export. The situation is a growing concern among tannery owners in Savar ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest Muslim festival, as around 50% of the total rawhides collected throughout the year come during the Eid period.
