Tanners look beyond US and EU for business
Leather exporters in Bangladesh have reinforced their drive to explore new markets for leather and leather goods export as shipments to main destinations have been shrinking due to the global economic meltdown.As part of the move, some industry businessmen have visited China, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia and Latin American nations.

JBS happy with chrome shavings recycling
JBS Couros the tanning unit of giant meat packer JBS say they that are happy with the performance of their chrome shavings recycling unit at their plant in Campo Grande, Brazil. After nineteen months of operation, the wet-blue shavings and trimmings recycling plant processes 200 tons of residue per month, and the projections are that this volume will be doubled in the near future.

Chinese growth helps Indian leather exports
Overall leather exports from India have fallen marginally by 3.4%, while exports to China, India’s greatest competitor, have gone up, helping the industry offset losses faced due to the slackening demand from its largest market Europe. According to data from the Director General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) of the Ministry of Commerce, the export of leather and leather products fell to $2.44 billion compared from $2.54 billion last year. Exports to China went up 27% over past year.
Aodeli Tannery opens in Fuxin
After a year of preparation and construction, the Fuxin based Aodeli Tannery officially opened with a grand ceremony on November 15, 2012. The event was attended by members of the industry and senior leaders of local government.
China is still where the action is
Over the past decade, and more so in the past five years or so, producers of raw material as well as finished leather and leather goods have come to rely on China as their principle market. This is not to rule out countries like South Korea and of course India and Vietnam, but generally, if there were not a market in China for all the industry produces, prices would be a mere fraction of what they currently are.

AIMPES, the Italian Association of Leather Product Manufacturers have collaborated with the Italian Institute of Photography in Milan to raise awareness about counterfeiting of leather products.
