Bangladesh: breakthrough in Savar tannery debate
As part of its long-running efforts to relocate leather processing factories from Dhaka’s Hazaribagh district to the leather industrial park of Savar, the Bangladeshi government has agreed to pay a compensation of Tk2.5 billion to 155 tanneries. A central effluent treatment plant (CETP) costing more than Tk8.28 billion will also be installed at the new site, according to ministry sources.
India: Australian government to help tackle Ganges pollution
At present, the Ganga is one of the world’s five most polluted rivers, and the tannery industry is one of the worst offenders. Engaged in the removal of flesh, fat and hair, as well as chemical treatments, these tanneries dispose of waste by discharging it into the water. The effluents threaten biodiversity and adversely affect the river’s flow. The upcoming project, funded by AusAID, will aim to clean the river and explore alternative options for Kanpur’s tannery industry.

Drought and high costs see US cattle herd shrink
Federally Inspected Slaughter for the 4-week period ending July 13, 2013, was estimated at 626,750 against 631,750 a year earlier. The year to date total of 17,047,000 is 1.5% down or 251,000 fewer head of cattle. This compares with 638,700 against 638,000 in our last report.

It seems we have arrived in the summer holiday mood sooner than one should expect. The hide market is stuck. The biggest buyers in Asia are seemingly having continuing problems with the opening of LCs due to the cash squeeze by the Chinese government. Orders are below expectations and we know some have bought more in the past than they need today. The government actions can also be the perfect excuse.
