Ethiopia will host the 12th All-African Leather Fair (AALF) and 5th world leather congress from 3-6 November 2021 in Addis Ababa, the Ministry of Trade and Industry disclosed.

Bangladesh’s Leather Industry Has a Child Labour Problem
According to a study, Bangladesh’s lucrative leather industry has children as young as seven years working with hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery or carrying heavy loads, endangering their health and lives. Globally, about 160 million children were subjected to child labour at the beginning of 2020, with nine million additional children at risk due to the impact of Covid-19, according to UNICEF. Almost half of them were in hazardous work that directly imperils their health and moral development, the UN children’s agency said.
Kenyan Leather Factory to Open for Operations
The plan to commence large scale production of leather products by Nairobi’s City Hall has moved a step closer after the county government handed over the Kariokor Leather factory for equipping. The manufacturing facility will now be equipped by the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) through the installation of state-of-the-art machines. Nairobi County trade executive Winfred Gathagu said the upgrade will enable the factory to produce local products for sale in the city and across the country.

Bangladesh Government Approves 10m Feet Rawhide
The government has allowed five companies to export ten million square feet of wet blue hide for the first time in the country’s history. According to the government order, the approved quantity of wet blue hides would be exported to the European Union, Russia, Ukraine, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Vietnam and Japan by June 30, 2022.
