Traceability high priority for leather and footwear brands

Supply chain transparency and traceability is becoming more important in today’s global marketplace. With a growing awareness of Corporate Social Responsibility, retailers and brands are requiring assurances about the origin and manufacture of materials and components to ensure that environmental, social and safety standards are met. Learn more about the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act of 2010 at the sustainable sourcing event to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 31 March 2011. If your company retails or manufacture in the state of California and your company’s gross annual receipts more than US$100 million then irrespective of where your company is based, you will need to comply with this new legislation, which comes into effect on January 1, 2012.

Proposition 65, a further legal requirement applicable in California, has recently become a product safety directive under which any retailer of a product or service can be challenged legally regarding the chemical content of a product against a list of 850 potential chemical candidates.

Brenda Jacobs, Counsel with Sidley Austin LLP, one of the world’s largest full service law firms will be presenting at this key event in Hong Kong and will share her experience of meeting the legal challenges of supplying and retailing in California and around the globe.

Another key speaker adding perspective on traceability is Tim Wilson from Historic Futures. Tim will be sharing his thoughts on a workable system for tracing materials and products within the supply chain. One possible application for such a system is to trace leather to upstream supply points such as slaughterhouse and farm. Such an application could have value when considering the restrictions on Brazilian cattle ranching in the Amazon and the need to monitor the hide supply from this region.

These and many other topical sourcing and sustainability issues will be discussed by a panel of key speakers and leading international experts in a compelling and informative programme dedicated to responsible product sourcing.
