The Greek leather industry continued to decline in 2001 due to the increase in shoe imports. In general, the economy also slowed and unemployment rose by 11%.
Exports in 2000 amounted to 1,910 tons of wet-salted hides against 1,722 in 1999, and 2,940,000 sheep skins against 16,000 in 1999, and 1,115,000 goatskins against 300,000 in 1999.
Also during 2000, 785 tons of wet-blue lambskins were exported as well as 147 tons of wet-blue goatskins.
The kill during 2001 amounted to 283,000 cattle against 284,000 in 2000, and 7,265,000 lambs and sheep against 7,290,000 in 2000, and 4,277,000 goats against 4,397,000 for 2000.
The animal population at the end of 2000 was 628,000 cattle, 9,235,000 sheep and 5,573,000 goats.
