The chief executive of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), Kevin Burke, recently noted that the average retail price of shoes in the US was almost the same in 2010 as it was in 1999.As the cost of leather and other raw materials have increased in recent months, Burke has concluded that margins throughout the footwear supply chain must be tightening.
In 1999, the average retail price of a pair of shoes in the US was $28.06. In 2010, Burke said, the average retail price was $28.40 per pair. This includes leather and all other non-leather footwear. One reason for the similarity in prices could very well be the increased use of cheaper synthetics in lieu of leather.
