Brian Jones died in December, 2004, after a long battle against leukaemia. He had retired from his chairmanship of Fenland Sheepskins after a lifetime of producing wool-on sheepskins for a wide variety of purposes. Mike Parson, head of BLC, writes: ‘He was very well known in the industry and respected for his views which were always honest and forthright. Throughout his life, Brian was interested in new and novel technologies in the manufacture of leather and the treatment of waste. He was also interested in the development of young scientists and technologists, in the well being of the British School of Leather Technology (BSLT), and he was a committed member of the Leather Industries Advisory Committee (LIAC).

‘Brian was for several years a member of the BLC executive board and BLC council and actively supported the reform that has led to the current operational board and supervisory board. Despite his illness, Brian was committed to BLC and as late as October 20 was chairing the Research Advisory Committee of industrialists and scientists evaluating the current and future BLC research programmes. Forever the fighter and optimist he was making plans for the years ahead. He endured his treatment with good grace and with great interest, reflecting his never ending desire to know more about any science in which he was involved.

‘Brian was a giver, he gave advice and encouragement in practical terms. He was a great friend to many in the leather producing industry, to BSLT and, in particular, to BLC. Brian was elected an Honorary Member of BLC in 2002. He will be missed.’
