The city of Fez in northern Morocco will host its first annual leather craft show this month, from 12-21 July. The aim of the show is to promote the economic value of Fez’s leather industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of the region’s leather-craft industry.
Set up over an area of 4,000 square metres, the exhibition will host over 120 professionals at exhibition stands; artisans, small and medium-sized organisations, and cooperatives. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, the show has been organised by the Chambre of Artisans of the Fez-Meknes region and is part of a greater strategic plan to appreciate local craftsmanship.
The leatherwork show will include exhibition stands, a leather antique sales area, and a design and leatherwork demonstration area. There will also be seminars and roundtable discussions by leather specialists, as well as training workshops for those wishing to broaden their skills.
The leather industry in Fez, and across Morocco is an important industrial sector, employing over 21,000 people every year according to figures from the Ministry of Industry, and the ancient tanneries of the city of Fez are a well-known tourist attraction.
