An embargo imposed on leather imports has resulted in a shortage of leather in Syria. Local shoe manufacturers claim that their raw material supplies have been cut in half by the embargo.
The Syrian shoe industry is having to rely on locally slaughtered cattle resources for raw material, assessed at 20,000 head per annum. The ban on the import of ‘natural crude leather’ was imposed by the Syrian government to prevent foot and mouth from reaching the country.
