About 4,000 out of the 25,000 workers have quit the Leather and Footwear Corporation of Viet Nam (Leaprodexim) to work for private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises, according to general director Nguyen Khac Thanh.

Though the leather company invested VND4,000 billion (US$267,000) in upgrading equipment and technology in the 1992-2000 period, the quality of the equipment and technology is still described as mediocre.

The number of enterprises that have six to ten production lines account for just 20% of the total number under Leaprodexim.
