Exports of leather garments declined by 17.3% during 2001-2002 compared with the corresponding period of 2000-2001, down from US$376 million to US$311 million.
Fawad Ijaz Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Export Association, said that during the month of June 2002, the export of leather garments declined by more than 47% compared with June 2001, down from $41.0 million to $12.7 million.
Exports of leather increased by 2.4% during 2001-2002, up from $233 million in 2000-2001 to $239 million.
The chairman of PLGMEA said that in order to arrest the decline in leather garment exports, it was important that the government should impose a 20% export duty on semi-finished and finished leather.
