The latest incidence data from the European Commission reveals that the UK’s BSE risk categorisation is now moderate. The data places the UK in the same risk category as most other EU member states, despite still having a significantly higher number of BSE incidents than other EU members.
The upper threshold for the moderate risk status was increased in May this year by the Office Internationale des Epizooties (OIE), from 100 cases per million adult cattle to 200 cases per million adult cattle. In August, the EU was recorded as having 160 confirmed BSE cases per million adult cattle.
