The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) is conducting laboratory and tannery trials of Enzyme-A, created by chemicals company Textan to replace sulfide for the unhairing of hides and skins. The enzyme is expected to solve a major environmental problem in leather tanning.
Textan were the first company in India to commercially produce bating enzyme for the leather tanning industry. With their strength in biotechnology research and development and commercial production, Textan have marketing alliances for their major products in the processing and pharmaceutical sectors with leading multinational companies such as Wockhardt.
Incorporated in 1976, the group are comprised of four companies such as Rajam Chemicals engaged in the manufacture of leather and textile processing auxiliaries, Nature Remedies Pvt Ltd which is into developing orthocure, and Life Care Products Pvt Ltd.
