In partnership with the leather industry, BASF have succeeded in developing an innovative top coat system for automotive leathers with very high fastness properties, and an extreme matting. This top coat system is based on Astacin Novomatt GG and Lepton Protector products.

Leather finishes that are formulated with Astacin Novomatt GG retain their matt appearance even if they are subjected to heavy wear, because the matting is based on an innovative technology: the matting particles are chemically bonded to the surrounding polymer matrix. This ensures that they are not rubbed off or rubbed into the binder film.

With conventional finishes unpleasant squeaking noises can be caused whenever two leather surfaces rub against each other. In this respect the new top coat system is highly advantageous. Leathers have significantly lower tendency to generate noise if the finish contains Astacin Novomatt GG in combination with Lepton Protector products.

Furthermore, the soiling resistance of leather finished with Astacin Novomatt GG in combination with Lepton Protector products is much better than the industry standard.

Astacin Novomatt GG and Lepton Protector products have been developed in line with BASF’s policy of responsible care: They are environmentally friendly and completely free of N-methylpyrrolidone or other organic solvents.

The benefits of finishes based on Astacin Novomatt GG and Lepton Protector products for their customers are obvious: they show excellent physical resistance, are extremely matt and not re-polishable. Furthermore, they allow an extraordinary soft and waxy handle, and an optimised squeak and soiling behaviour. Therefore, it is possible to produce leather with unique properties.
