Kenyan newspapers recently published an article about the re-opening of the famous KMC (Kenya Meat Commission). At the time this meat plant was the supplier of the Kenya’s highest quality cattle hides. KMC opened in 1950 but closed their doors in 1992 after complete refurbishment by the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan.
Many in the trade will remember the hides of those days and would love to see a return. The government is now said to have written off the US$41million debt owed by KMC giving rise to the possibility of re-opening. However, we have heard such rumours before and it remains to be seen if and when the first hide is produced.
