They also revoked the trade permit of a JBS-Swift & Co plant after it sent a box of beef containing banned ribs. Despite this, beef exports to South Korea are continuing to grow.
This does not please everyone and some 68 lawmakers have submitted to a resolution urging President Roh Moo-hyun and his South Korean National Assembly administration to ban imports of beef from the United States. The group includes 28 members of the pro-government United New Democratic Party, 25 of the main opposition Grand National Party and nine of the Democratic Labour Party, according to the Korea Times.
‘President Roh and the government should suspend the import of US beef immediately’, the resolution stated. ‘We have no choice but to ask if the government is exercising its ‘quarantine sovereignty’ righteously.’ The legislators’ plea follows the series of US violations of Seoul’s beef import regulations, which have led to suspensions of quarantine inspections.
