While no official confirmation was available, it is understood that at this stage the plant is making entirely for export to Fiat.
The plant is expected to make around 60 sets/day this year, with plans to grow to 200 sets/day next year. Around 80 staff are or will be employed by the plant, which is in a separate building in the Mario Levi complex.
A source close to the company said it was believed to be the first black empowered automotive sewing plant in the country.
Sewing plant
Mario Levi Manufacturing SA have opened a sewing plant in a joint venture with an unnamed black empowerment group in Uitenhage, South Africa. It is reliably understood that the plant began operations at the end of September.
