Last minute business done

4 September 2006

During early August the whole country appeared to have gone on holidays but just before they did a lot of hide business was done for September. In Ireland the kill of cattle to the end of July was up by over 120,000 compared to the end of July 2005 and there is now a feeling in some quarters that there will be a much smaller kill in the back end of the year. It also appears that some European tanners feel the same and big numbers of hides were booked at the end of the month. The gap between Irish hides and UK hides continued to narrow significantly as the effect of the anthrax problem in shipping hides to China from the UK resulted in a lot of UK hides offered to Italy. The number of cow hides from the older cattle destruction scheme (OCDS) passed the 80,000 mark in the UK and to date the government department handling the control of these hides has not made any decision regarding their future use. Indeed a number of meetings have been rescheduled to the extent that no one is sure what is happening. It is entirely possible that the go ahead to tan these hides will not be given before December 2006. It is entirely possible that the go ahead to tan these hides will not be given before December 2006. So fundamentally the hide market appears firm and prices are not expected to fall in September despite the large stock of hides in warehouses in China. Prices at the end of July were as follows: 36kg+…….............................................................. 86p 31/35.5..................................................................... 95p 26/30.5 ................................................................... 1.03 22/25.5 ................................................................... 1.10 Salted cows were £26.50 each. Lambskin business continued to be dominated by just a few players in Türkiye. Because of the fall in the wool market, Chinese tanners had no interest in UK/Irish skins and Poland appears to be waiting for lower prices before it will enter the market. Doubleface skins went for £4 delivered Türkiye and new season fellmongers went for £2.20 ex yard, bare pelts £1 ex yard.
