Mohammad Shafi Tannery Group have formed a joint venture under the banner of International Leather System with a service company run by Josep Badrinas, a Spanish leather industrialist, for processing leather with the latest technology for European consumption. The leather is produced in the Shafi Tannery. Josep Badrinas told Leather International that his company provided technical collaboration for finished leather and the preparation of about 2 million ft² of finished leather per year. 'We import high quality raw material, mostly from UK and Australia.' Giving the reasons for a joint venture with Mohammad Shafi Tannery, he said that due to environmental concerns, the increasing cost of treatment and rising wages, the tanning industry was shrinking in Europe. About 50% of their production is for shoe uppers. In Spain he said that the shoe industry is highly developed particularly in the Valencia and Alicante areas where they have the best workforces. In Pakistan the domestic slaughterneeds much improvement. The butchers have to be trained to avoid the cuts in the hides and skins, he added.
