Abattoir shut over poor hygiene

10 July 2008

In another stench related incident, the town abattoir at Moyo has been closed due to poor hygiene. Dr Dominic Lali Mundugo-Ogo said he took the decision after investigating complaints from people living around the slaughterhouse about a terrible stench.

‘No slaughter is allowed in the premises until the level of cleanliness meets the required sanitary standards', he ordered. In a letter addressed to the town clerk dated March 13, Lali accused the town authorities of renting out the newly constructed modern abattoir to a school while neglecting the existing one. Over 100 boys of Moyo Town Secondary School use the building as a dormitory. He noted that there was no latrine and urinal for the students and ordered that they should leave. The veterinary chief observed that rubbish, cow dung and blood clots were dumped near the abattoir, attracting droves of flies. ‘The septic tank for draining the blood and water from the abattoir is not operational, producing a foul smell to the people living nearby', he added.
